WHAT ARE COOKIES?

Cookies are typically text strings that websites (so-called “publishers” or “first parties”) visited by the user or different websites or web servers (so-called “third parties”) place and store – directly in the case of publishers and indirectly, i.e., through them, in the case of third parties – within a terminal device available to the user.

Cookies and, to a large extent, other tracking tools may have different characteristics in terms of duration and thus be classified according to their lifespan (session or persistent cookies), or from a subjective perspective (depending on whether the publisher acts independently or on behalf of a third party).

In line with the guidelines provided by the Data Protection Authority and opinions issued by the European Working Party under Article 29 (now replaced by the European Data Protection Board, also known as EDPB), cookies can be classified into the following categories:

Technical Cookies (no consent required) Technical cookies are necessary for transmitting a communication over an electronic communication network and for providing the requested service. They include:

  • Session or navigation cookies: These are cookies that are not persistently stored on the user’s device and are deleted when the browser is closed. They are strictly limited to transmitting session identifiers required to enable safe and efficient browsing of the site.
  • Functionality cookies: These cookies allow the site to remember the settings chosen by users, such as language or privacy preferences, in order to enhance services and the browsing experience.

Analytical Cookies (consent required) Analytical cookies are managed by the site owner, rather than third parties, such as Google Analytics, to process and provide statistical analysis on the use and interaction of the user with the site. These cookies can identify the user.

Profiling Cookies (consent required) Profiling cookies are used to associate specific actions or recurring behavioral patterns in the use of the site’s features (patterns) to identified or identifiable individuals, in order to group different profiles into homogeneous clusters of varying sizes. This allows the data controller to, among other things, offer services in a more personalized manner, beyond what is strictly necessary for service delivery, as well as send targeted advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user during browsing.

Cookies can typically be installed:

  • Directly by the website owner and/or data controller (so-called first-party cookies);
  • By entities external to the visited website (so-called third-party cookies). Unless otherwise specified, it is emphasized that these cookies fall under the direct and exclusive responsibility of the respective manager. Further information on privacy and usage can be found directly on the respective managers’ websites.
